Many Nigerians Arrested As Ghana Immigration Begins Crackdown On Illegal Immigrants

3

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has warned that it would prosecute landlords and property owners who rent out their facilities to foreigners without proper immigration documents.

Ghana began the massive crackdown after a viral video showing immigration officials being attacked by persons suspected to Nigerian nationals.

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS),has begun a nationwide crackdown on landlords and property owners who have rented out to non-Ghanaians with no immigration status.

The GIS said the practice of accommodating illegal immigrants over the years led to a high spate of criminal activities that was hard to monitor.

A statement issued by the GIS in Accra and signed by the Comptroller-General, Mr Kwame Asuah Takyi, said the use of such properties by persons who were illegally residing in the country made such owners liable of the offence of harbouring an illegal migrant, as stipulated in Section 52(1)(b) of the Immigration Act, 2000 (Act 573).

“Section 52(1)(b) states that a person who knowingly harbours any person whom he knows is to be deported or has reasonable grounds to believe has acted in contravention of this Act commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding GH¢1,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or both,” it added.

According to the statement, properties and residences occupied by illegal foreign migrants were being used in most cases to commit crimes against the state, including cyber fraud.

The Public Relations Officer of the GIS, Superintendent Michael Amoako Attah said the service will not relent on its effort to clamp down on illegal immigrants.

“If you are landlord and you want to give your property out to a non-Ghanaians, the law says that be very sure that, that person has proper residential status from the Ghana Immigration service. If we come to your premises and such people are there [without documentation] then you have contravened the law,” he said.

Nigeria’s Presidential and National Assembly Elections have been postponed

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) made the announcement few hours before the polls were due to open on Saturday. Explaining why it postponed the general elections earlier scheduled for Saturday, 16th February, 2019.

INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu told reporters early Saturday in Abuja, “Proceeding with the election as scheduled is no longer feasible.”

He said the difficult decision was needed to ensure a free and fair vote.

The Presidential and National Assembly elections have been rescheduled for Saturday 23 February.

Governorship, state assembly and federal area council elections have been rescheduled until Saturday 9 March.

The announcement came after an emergency meeting held on 15th February at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

Mr Yakubu said the decision was made following a “careful review” of the election “operational plan”, adding that there was a “determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections.”

He said the delay was necessary to give the commission time to address vital issues and “maintain the quality of our elections.”

Nigerian politicians who Incite violence in February elections could be banned from entering the UK

Incite violence, get visa ban, forfeit assets, Britain warns Nigerian politicians.

United Kingdom on Wednesday gave its warning to Nigerian politicians against violence during the February 16, presidential and National Assembly elections as well as the March 2, governorship and states houses of assembly polls.

The British high commissioner to Nigeria, Ms Catriona Laing, has warned that Nigerian politicians who incite or execute violence during the Saturday, February 16 elections, would have their visas banned and assets in the UK seized and they could experience a worst case scenario of prosecution.

Laing gave the warning at a press briefing on Wednesday, February 13, in Abuja to unveil the Election Situation Room of the Civil Society Situation Room set up by a coalition of civil society organisations to monitor the polls in Abuja,

She said “We will apply this absolutely across board not directed to any particular party; so, we are monitoring and looking out for hate speech.

“Our two worries are on security not just on the role the police will play to ensure peace but about the role individuals play by getting angry or militias being paid to disrupt elections.

“Then, another worry is fake news, that is why we rely on CSOs and we will work with them to get information.’’

At the event, the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington said, “The time has come for this outside world that cares so much about Nigeria to listen to the people of Nigeria and to see what each of them do and then forward the results to lift Nigeria up.”

The UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, appreciated the CSOs for the inauguration of the situation room.

He said it was a good work towards the elections and showed that the groups were prepared for the elections and ready to monitor the voting process.

We wish Nigeria a peaceful, free and fair election. God bless Nigeria.

I’m not Corrupt says Buhari during the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Rally

0

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday said that he was not corrupt because in all the positions he has held in the country, he has never been convicted for corruption

He made the declaration at Abakaliki township stadium in Ebonyi State, during the All Progressives Congress (APC), presidential campaign.

Buhari was former military head of state (1983-85), governor of the defunct North Eastern State (1975–1976), and chairman Petroleum Trust Fund (1994-95).

He said: “I can assure you that I, as the president, today have never been in a position of abusing trust. As a governor of the whole six north eastern states, as minister of petroleum for over three years and as a former head of state. I was arrested, detained, investigated but they never found anything against me.”

The president thanked Ebonyi people for turning out in their large numbers for the rally, saying that they demonstrated that they cannot be bought; he urged them to hold him by his words.

Buhari recalled that when he came for campaign in 2015, he promised three things: to tackle the security situation in the country that time in 17 local governments in the North East were under the control of Boko Haram but as at today, there is no local government under the control of the terrorists.

He said: “The important thing is that, please try and hold us by our promise. When we came here the last time, we told you there are three fundamental things the country is facing. First we had to secure the country because part of the country was under threat in the North East, at least 17 local governments were in the hands of Boko Haram; second was the economy. The able-bodied unemployed persons in Nigeria are too many. The thirdly was to fight corruption.”

The president congratulated the military and other law- enforcement agencies that today none of the local governments in the North East is under the control of Boko Haram.

“They have resulted in indoctrinating young men and abducting young girls below the ages of 15, wrap them with explosives and send them to soft targets – churches, mosques, market places and motor parks. Even that is becoming rear now.”

Buhari also said that with a favourable weather, Nigeria had achieved food security and no longer imports rice, adding that the money saved from importation was now being used for infrastructural development

He added that the money is now being channeled to building roads, rails among other infrastructural development.

He added that “the last thing is about fighting corruption and bribery. Fighting corruption is a very difficult process, but we are doing our best by trying to reorganise the Nigeria police and the judiciary itself. Because, we appointed people that went into public office without their own houses, without even maybe good cars, but within three years they build houses in Abuja, opened accounts in Europe or America and we cannot touch them. But when we discover what they have, we take them to court and when we take them to the court, we hope they will be prosecuted and then we will punish them.

“I can assure you that I, as the president today, have never been in a position of abusing trust. As a governor of the whole six north eastern states, as Minister of Petroleum for over three years and as a former head of state. I was arrested, detained, investigated but they never found anything against me. So I went through all the rigmarole that is against our development as a nation. God has given us people; he has given us resources.

President Buhari, therefore, urged the people to vote for him to continue with the good work his administration had started.

The APC state chairman, Eze Nwachukwu Eze, described Governor David Umahi’s administration as a total failure, urging the president to resist the temptation of believing the governor’s sweet talks, that he would support his re-election.

The Ebonyi APC party boss said, the civil servants in the state had been short changed by the PDP administration. He said that the governor pays only what he feels like paying at the end of every month. Source

Popular Nigerian Foods and their Health Benefits

0

We have rounded up 13 native Nigerian foods and fruits that often goes by their local names, their health benefits and English names.

It’s a common norm for us in Nigeria to refer to our favorite local dishes and fruits by their local names. In most cases we simply refer to fruits or foods by their generally accepted local names, regardless of ethnic diversity. A clear example of this occurrence is the use of udara to refer to African apple throughout Nigeria, a name which originally came from the Igbo ethnic group.

Did I just mention African apple? Wait till you hear the best part.

Ogbono Soup is one of the most popular Nigerian dishes but the English name is not so popular.

No one can deny the pleasure that comes from eating a crisp velvet tamarind in a warm afternoon or the mouth-watery taste of Ogbono soup delicacy. However, many people turn to Nigerian foods or fruits for their potential health benefits—we cannot overstate the benefits of eating healthy. So, from 13 to one, we countdown the most popular Nigerian foods—that we love to call by their local names—and their health benefits.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) West African 2018: Ghana Overtakes Nigeria

0

Nigeria’s Anglophone brother Ghana has overtaken Nigeria as the largest recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Africa.

The drop in Nigeria’s share of FDI could be attributable to different macroeconomic environment coupled with severe recessions through 2016 and into 2017.

The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Global Investment Trends Monitor Report released on Monday, said “Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy and top oil producer saw FDI drop 36 percent to $2.2 billion in 2018. This decline saw Ghana overtake Nigeria as country with the highest FDI in West Africa, recording an inflow of $3.3 billion. While some policy decisions have been blamed for Nigeria’s poor FDI inflow in 2018, UNCTAD expects 2019 to be better for the country, especially due to some significant Greenfield project announcement in the oil and gas industry.”

It also stated that “Africa registered a 6% increase in FDI inflows in 2018 (US$40billion, up from a revised US$38 billion in 2017), but the growth was concentrated in few economies and the aimed for the shift from the natural resources dominated FDI profile of the continent towards a more balanced sectoral distribution was only partially visible, in that the relatively diversified economies, such as Egypt and South Africa, saw more stable and increasing FDI inflows,”

Foreign Direct Investment per region, 2018 compared to 2017 (Screenshot, UNCTAD)

Egypt, where recent economic reforms have led to improved growth, was Africa’s biggest recipient of FDI in 2018, recording an inflow of $7.9 billion, a 7 percent increase over the $7.4 billion recorded a year earlier. According to UNCTAD, investment inflow was in real estate, food processing, oil and gas exploration and renewable energy.

FDI inflow into South Africa had fallen since 2014, but it recovered in 2018, with large investments in mining, food processing, petroleum refining, information and communications technology, as well as renewable energy. Thus, South Africa received FDI amounting to $7.1 billion in 2018 from $1.3 billion in 2017.

Ethiopia, despite its 24 percent fall in investments to $3.1 billion, maintained its top rank in East Africa with investments in petroleum refining, mineral extraction, real estate, manufacturing and renewable energy.

UNCTAD concludes that progress in the implementation of the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA), diversification in Greenfield projects targeting the manufacturing sector and the stabilization of commodity prices show that FDI in Africa could potentially grow in 2019 at a higher pace than the 6 percent recorded in 2018.

Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Present President Buhari Mohammed with a new 10- year Diplomatic E-Passport

0

President Muhammad Buhari and Vice Yemi Osinbajo have been presented with a new 10-year diplomatic passport by the Nigeria Immigration service.

The officials of the NIS captured the biometrics of the President and his Vice, before the commencement of an extraordinary meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the presidential villa.

The passports were presented by the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, and the Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service, Mohammed Babandede.

Dambazau said, Apart from the 10-year validity, the new passport, according to the NIS has enhanced security and is “weather friendly”.

“We have series of cross border issues to deal with and series of challenges in terms of border security and management and one of the best ways to do that in addition to bio-metrics, is to ensure that our passport contains all these security features,’’ he added.

The Immigration Service said the new passport has polycarbonate technology and that it now saves Nigerians the time needed to frequently visit Nigerian embassies for new passports.

According to Babandede, the new 32-page booklet standard passport will cost N25, 000 and 130 dollars abroad, while 64-booklet passport with five years validity will cost N35, 000 and 150 dollars abroad.

He explained that the 64-page booklet passport with 10-year validity will cost N70, 000 in Nigeria and 230 dollars abroad. He also said that the old passport remained valid
