The Role of Managed Network Security Services in Cybersecurity Risk Mitigation

MSSPs differ from traditional Managed Service Providers (MSPs) that offer general network maintenance like Software as a Service. Instead, they focus solely on security services, digital assets, and infrastructure protection.

Data breaches can cost your business millions in fines, lost profits, and loss of reputation. A capable MSSP can help prevent these attacks from happening to your business.

Detection

The Role of Managed Network Security Services in Cybersecurity Risk Mitigation

MSSPs managed network security services have a broad catalog of security products they can resell, integrate with other devices, and provide technical support. They may also perform penetration tests and security audits. Some specialize in a specific type of security, such as firewalls or intrusion prevention systems. Others are pure resellers of third-party security devices or may act as value-added consultants, offering their products in addition to those of other vendors.

MSSPs typically operate a network operations center (NOC) with security analysts who deliver 24/7 customer monitoring and support. This allows them to identify threats and respond quickly, even when a customer’s internal team is unavailable or has fallen behind in handling the latest cyber risks.

The best way to determine whether an MSSP can meet your security needs is to ask about its experience and expertise. The most reputable security service providers are already long established in the cybersecurity business and a good number of them have hundreds of security experts at their disposal. They also stay abreast of all the innovative cybersecurity trends and techniques.

One of the key things to look out for in a managed network security service is in-depth and exclusive security measures of IT systems. This includes virus protection and a managed SOC that provides constant monitoring and all-around threat detection. The best MSSPs usually have global operations and are always keen on identifying how various threats affect their customers’ networks and ways of dealing with these threats.

Prevention

The Role of Managed Network Security Services in Cybersecurity Risk Mitigation

In addition to detecting and responding to threats, an MSSP can provide preventative services. This includes monitoring Software and application configurations for vulnerabilities. It can also help to ensure compliance with industry and government standards.

A good MSSP is capable of monitoring the entire organization’s attack surface. They swiftly identify vulnerable areas where cyber attacks can infiltrate security systems and recommend strategic solutions to limit these weaknesses. This can range from creating security policies, deploying Software and hardware protections, or implementing internal controls and procedures.

Another critical role of an MSSP is to keep up with the latest threat landscape. They can do this by continually monitoring and utilizing advanced analytics to detect attacks as they occur. They can also implement patch management solutions to eliminate vulnerabilities created by out-of-date applications.

Cyberattacks are increasingly a problem for businesses of all sizes. When these attacks happen, they can result in the loss of proprietary data and confidential customer information. They can expose an enterprise to legal hurdles, financial losses, and regulatory violations.

Identifying and evaluating an organization’s risk is the key to preventing cyber attacks. Recognizing that a cyberattack will harm a business’s finances and may put the company out of business entirely is crucial. To avoid this fate, it is critical to enlist the help of an MSSP.

Response

The Role of MSSPin Cybersecurity Risk Mitigation

In addition to detecting breaches and cyberattacks, MSSPs offer ongoing threat intelligence. They monitor a company’s firewall to assess its strength and identify threats that might go unnoticed. Some even conduct automated penetration testing to detect potential vulnerabilities and weaknesses in the firewall.

MSSPs also monitor software applications and patch management to eliminate vulnerabilities resulting from out-of-date programs. This reduces the risk of security breaches, prevents unauthorized access, and ensures that systems are up to date. They may also assist with compliance management by providing tools like policy templates and assistance with security audits.

Whether you need a cybersecurity expert to fill in the gaps in your internal team or to replace it entirely, an MSSP can provide the expertise and resources you need. They have high-availability security operations centers that operate around the clock to deliver services designed to minimize your cybersecurity risk.

It’s important to distinguish between an MSSP and a Managed Detection and Response (MDR) vendor. A vendor that positions its cybersecurity expertise front and center in its marketing and promotes a cybersecurity-focused set of services is likely an MSSP. At the same time, one that appears to be more general in scope is most likely an MDR. The distinction is vital because MDRs offer more advanced managed network security services.

Recovery

The Role of MSSPin Cybersecurity Risk Mitigation

Cybersecurity is a complex problem, and it’s unlikely that any organization has the resources to handle every facet of it in-house. Instead, businesses that seek to protect themselves from the potentially catastrophic fallout of a cyberattack can outsource some or all of their cybersecurity functions to a leading MSSP.

An MSSP’s duties can include a security assessment of the company’s digital assets and systems to identify gaps. Then, on-site consulting can help fill those gaps, resulting in a more secure system. This may involve installing new hardware and Software, including an advanced firewall or a virtual security appliance. The best MSSPs also offer 24/7 system monitoring because many modern business operations require around-the-clock protection of sensitive data.

In addition, experienced Managed Network Security Services can provide various other security services. These include threat intelligence sharing, malware protection and remediation, penetration testing, and database scanning. They can even assist in developing a security policy and recovery procedures.

An excellent cybersecurity strategy will not only reduce a company’s risk of a cyberattack, but it can lower insurance premiums and save the business money. It will also increase the confidence of customers, investors, and stakeholders. And, perhaps most importantly, it can minimize the damage that could result from a successful cyberattack or data breach.

Netflix Kenya: 2 Years Free Subscription Plan Comes to an End

Netflix is bidding farewell to its complimentary plan in Kenya, starting next month, November. This change will affect thousands of viewers who have enjoyed free access since 2021 to Netflix movies and shows. In a message sent out to users on Tuesday, Netflix explained that once the free service is deactivated, memberships will automatically be canceled. Subscribers will then need to choose from one of the paid plans.

In the email to subscribers, Netflix wrote.

“On November 1, 2023, the Free Plan will no longer be available, and your membership will end. If you want to cancel, no action is required. Your membership will be automatically canceled when the free plan ends.

“If you want to keep watching, upgrade to one of our paid plans. Starting from as low as Ksh200 ($1.35) per month, you can unlock all shows and movies, more features, and the option to watch on your phone, TV, or laptop.”

What Happened to the Reduction of Subscription Prices?

In September 2021, Netflix announced the launch of a complimentary mobile plan in Kenya. Targeting its 20 million internet users in the country. The plan required no payment information during sign-up. It was accessible to Android users aged 18 and above, and it was ad-free. Although the company didn’t specify the duration of this free tier or potential expansion to other markets. But this initiative was more than appreciated by Kenyans. Netflix’s goal was to push its service to various markets and make it accessible to a wider audience, particularly those without conventional payment methods.

The discontinuation of the free plan is a saddening reality for Kenyan users. But it’s part of the company’s renewed focus on converting the massive users in the country into paying customers. Also, the decision is coming just a few months after Netflix announced there will be a 37 percent reduction in subscription prices for its Kenyan users. This was a result of the mounting competition with emerging streaming services. However, all that has changed for Kenyan Netflix users.

CBN Exchange Rate: Floating Naira and Unifying FX

In Africa, there is a nation that has been caught amid fascinating economic experiments. A place where the exchange rates danced to different rhythms. Where the line between foreign exchange rate and exchange rate systems blurred, and where distinct segmented markets, economic policies, and national priorities weaved together a patchwork of economic downturns. That nation is Nigeria. And one of those experiments is the changes to the CBN exchange rate and the floating of naira following a stringent exchange rate system.

For decades, Nigeria alternated two foreign exchange rates(fixed and floating) in a multiple exchange rate system. All the while leaning more toward the fixed regime. Creating opportunities for every segment of the market to have its exchange rate; parallel, official, etc. Of course, the black market or parallel rates were always more favorable to BDCs, as opposed to the official CBN exchange rate.

Throughout history, this has stirred some controversy as the naira devalued. Many Nigerians turned to these parallel markets. And the World Bank, as well as other multilateral financial organizations encouraged the Central Bank to unify its exchange rate on several occasions.

Now, years after their rigid stance on not unifying the rates, the Central Bank of Nigeria has officially announced that the naira will float freely in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange market(NFX). There will no longer be multiple exchange rates, since this encouraged arbitrage, and volatility, among other economic challenges. Instead, the NFX market will operate a uniform single exchange rate. But how did this system come to be after CBN’s obstinate determination to pursue a fixed exchange rate over the years?

Official Press Release Of CBN Exchange Rates:

CBN Floats Naira and Unifies Exchange Rates

In a press release, CBN outlines significant changes aimed at streamlining and enhancing the operations of the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market. These changes include the consolidation of segments. Adoption of the “Willing Buyer, Willing Seller” model, Determination of rates based on executed transactions. Elimination of trading limits on oversold positions. Re-introduction of order-based two-way quotes, implementation of an Order Book, and revised trading hours.

According to CBN in their statement, all market participants and the general public are to adhere to the changes made to the operations in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange (FX) Market.

  • Abolishment of segmentation. All segments are now collapsed into the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window. Applications for medicals, school fees, BTA/PTA, and SMEs would continue to be processed through deposit money banks.
  • Re-introduction of the “Willing Buyer, Willing Seller” model at the I&E Window. Operations in this window shall be guided by the extant circular on the establishment of the window, dated 21 April 2017, and referenced FMD/DlR/ClR/GEN/08/007. All eligible transactions are permitted to access foreign exchange at this window.
  • The operational rate for all government-related transactions shall be the weighted average rate of the preceding day’s executed transactions at the I&E window, calculated to two (2) decimal places.
  • Proscription of trading limits on oversold FX positions with permission to hedge short positions with OTC futures. Limits on overbought positions shall be zero.
  • Re-introduction of order-based two-way quotes, with bid-ask spread of N1. All transactions shall be cleared by a Central Counter Party (CCP).
  • Reintroduction of Order Book to ensure transparency of orders and seamless execution of trades.
  • The operational hours of trades shall be from 9am to 4pm, Nigeria time.
  • Cessation of RT200 Rebate Scheme and the Naira4Dollar Remittance Scheme, with effect from 30 June 2023.

Spot trading is one of the most common methods of trading digital currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin, Tether, etc. It simply involves purchasing or selling choice altcoins at the current market rate to make profits on the spot. Or holding it for a longer period to make profits.

To trade cryptocurrency like Bitcoin on Binance via spot trade can be either short or long Bitcoin trade. By trading long, you’re speculating that the value of Bitcoin will rise and you can sell and make a profit. Traders can go short regardless with the expectation that Bitcoin will fall. And they can buy and resell them when it rises.

But how does Spot Trading work on the Binance platform?

  • Create a Binance account, log in, select “trade,” then click on the “spot” option.

This can be done by enabling some security protocols like Two-Factor Authentication. Such as biometrics, Google authenticator, email, or phone number verification. Once completed, the account is ready for trading and users can start making deposits. The deposit options available to Nigerian traders are Fiat and cryptocurrencies.

Ways to Trade Cryptocurrency on Binance

There are different trading features that new traders on the Binance platform might want to familiarize themselves with. They are Spot, Margin, Isolated Margin, and Futures Trading. We’ll be looking at Spot and Futures trading.

Spot traders exchange crypto assets based on current market prices and usually, the transaction is completed immediately. While traders in the futures market bid on future contracts to trade crypto assets at specific dates in the future.

In spot trading, the buyer claims ownership of the assets and can do with them whatever he or she wishes. But in futures trade, there is an underlying agreement to speculate the prices of said assets without owning them.

Binance is one of the best futures market exchanges for Nigerians to safely bet on the prices of cryptocurrency derivatives such as futures.

Should Nigerian Investors Invest in Binance?

The launch of Binance in Nigeria made trading cryptocurrencies more convenient than it ever was. Unlike most exchange platforms and fintech apps in Nigeria, transactions on Binance are fast, secure, and seamless.

The Binance P2P trading platform also supports the exchange of various crypto assets with zero transaction fees or charges. On crypto exchange marketplaces like Paxful and Quidax the buyers and sellers pay trading fees. Investors planning to invest in cryptocurrencies should try Binance.
