The Independent National Electoral Commission announced the commencement of political campaigns on September 28, 2022, in its scheduled timetable. The long awaited time for the citizens of Nigeria to make a decision that will change the course of history. Owing to the fact that by May 29, 2023, a new president will assume authority. Consequently, millions of registered voters bide the time to cast their votes. Below are some of the 2023 presidential campaign proceedings.
Nigeria Celebrates Independence Amid 2023 Presidential Campaigns
On October 1st 2022, throngs of people embarked on marches to show support to their choice political parties as Nigeria concomitantly celebrated its 62nd year as an independent nation. These teeming supporters trooped out of the comfort of their homes across the country’s geopolitical zones. They set out with vigour, both young, old, strong, weak, embittered, and ailing, while several others ditched their families, friends and businesses. A revolution unlike any other. The race is first individual before collective.
An entire movement evidently geared towards abolishing the nation’s maladies to rediscover a new Nigeria. Old Nigeria has since failed. The wrong decision will surely result in continuous, fruitless attempts to grapple with an ll-fated republic. One polluted with despair and wrung dry of optimism. The thousands who marched wielded placards, with even smaller cards in their respective pockets. It was their only tickets to freedom and they hope it would count when the die is cast.
Nevertheless, the modalities of operations for the campaigns were read to the various political parties on September 26, 2022 in accordance with the 2022 Electoral Act. INEC Chairman, Professor Mamood Yakubu, urged political parties to heed to the provisions of the Constitution. As well as the Electoral Act, the Police Act and the Public Order Act for the proper and peaceful conduct of political campaigns, rallies and processions.
Professor Mamood also employed the parties not to taint the 2023 presidential campaign slogans or rallies with “abusive language directly or indirectly, which are likely going to injure religious, ethnic, tribal or sectional feelings.” Reiterating that the media is vital in the successful outcome of the election. He equally reassured the public that the commission will deploy technology to give Nigerians a complete experience of electoral justice.
